Starting from contemporary theorist Benjamin Bratton’s notion of the hand as a continuously evolving interface, this work imagines the state of a hand that is constantly adapting to the use of digital objects. The sculptural form focused on the mouse and joystick as objects of observation—particularly the ergonomic mouse, which allows the hand to naturally and effortlessly conform to its shape. This seamless fit creates what might be seen as the modern human’s “natural” hand: one that is always ready to slide and click.
I also began thinking about ergonomically designed tools that are tailored through bodily modelling—objects that are scanned, computed, and customised through a process of translating physical reality into virtual models, and then back again into physical form. In response to this, I bought a hand from Taobao—a prosthetic hand—and modified it so it could grip an object shaped like a hand itself.
